iPhone Distraction

Over the last few weeks I have started to realize that many things in life are purely distracting us from reality. I have few hobbies which I care to mention; photography, computers etc. I can spend many hours immersed in either and then wonder where the time went. But, recently I have had a new distraction. My Apple iPhone. It’s very easy to get so wrapped up in it, that life just passes you by. I’m spending little time on the computer in the last few weeks and even less with my camera. Is this good or bad?
Bad I think. I love my photography and I’m going to make a conscious effort to continue course and assignments before Spring starts. I’m putting the finishing touches to my new website update and soon things will be back to normal.

Back to work, literally

So after the ending of my employment with AstraZeneca, back in December 2007, I decided to travel before starting the diffcult and stressful task of finding another job. However, I never thought that 10 weeks after leaving AZ I’d would be contacted to work there again.

Back in February, I received a call, asking if I would like to work on contract for their HR department rebuilding their intranet sites. After some short discussions it was all agreed and setup.

Contracting with a corporation means legalities. This means I had to setup a company to trade under. I enjoyed the whole company name thing. Going through endless lists of trading names, finally deciding on one to then find some had already registered it. So, a new approach was to use the WebCheck on the Companies House website to see was wasn’t already registered. This was much easier. So eventually I decided on the company name ‘Click Design Solutions Limited’. Not very short but it was available. What can you do? I’ll trade as Click and legally it’s Click Design Solutions Limited.

Then I need a business account, an accountant and then payroll, P35s, P11s. It is has been a very steep learning curve. I say, ‘curve’ maybe a mean ‘climb’.

Finally, it’s all running smoothly, contracts are being worked on, invoices are being processed and money is being banked.

As the months roll on, I have picked up other projects along the way, which makes the whole contract thing a whole lot sweeter. I know that this will eventually come to an end but while the contracts are flowing I’m gratefully harvesting the rewards.

Going minimal

This week, I’m having an office re-organisation due to high staffing costs and low output. I have been clearing my room of anything that isn’t required. I will box up, shelve and file anything of relevance and throw out everything that isn’t needed. So I’m currently in a ‘selection pool’ with a large printer and a electronic stapler.

I have painted the office white and bought a new desk from Ikea. This could be seen to the untrained eye as just something to do between applying for jobs, playing my Xbox and having cups of tea. Well, yes it is. I have to do something everyday. These days don’t fill themselves!!!

Seriously though, I believe there is a real benefit to clearing the clutter and cleaning up. It clears my mind of all that unresolved junk and allows you to think straight, letting you organise yourself better and deal with the work at hand.

Organising my life

Things to do in the next few weeks.

- Find a job
- Buy a car
- Tidy my office and put up some shelves
- Complete my first college assignment
- Finish the patio in the garden
- Tidy up the garden for Spring
- Lose 20 pounds in weight
- Sign on at the job centre
- Tidy up the garage
- Find a TV stand or shelf solution

Unemployment isn’t all Daytime TV you know.

Becoming more of the man

It has occurred to me that holidays and travelling away from home isn’t good for my health. While travelling, I start to eat sugary and fatty foods and eat less fresh fruit and vegetables. It’s so easy to choose a diner or take out in the evening instead of coming home and cooking a proper meal. I can see how so many people here in America are overweight. After just one week on holiday I’m feeling fatter and lazier. Although I’m walking alot it’s enough to justify those burgers and Oreos.

I will have to set in motion a goal to lose 20 pounds when I get back in the UK. I currently weigh 185 pounds. So my goal is to get to 165 pounds.
