I can imagine that with winter closing in, everyone in the UK is dredding next quarter’s energy bills. I was astounded just how much electricity and gas we were using so decided to take action. Over the next few months I will be doing the following.
Insulating the loft
I have bought 3x 12m rolls of 100mm glass mineral insulation. It’s reasonably cheap and a nightmare to lay as my loft is only 5 feet in height. However, the insulation of the loft is paramount to anything else. All the heat generated by my gas burning boiler goes upward through the loft and then goodbye. The loft insulation will reduce the heat loss and therefore keep the gas use down.
Timer setting
By setting the timer to only come on when the room temperature reaches a low threshold will make the usage less too.
Turning down the heat
I have reduced the holding tank’s temperature to just 65C instead of 75C. Thus spending less time warming the radiators.
Shutting down at night
This will simply shutdown any items on ‘standby’. A timer reaches 12 midnight and everything (except for the Sky Box) in the living room switches off.
Hopefully in a month or so I will see some positive results.
